My denomination just elected its first woman to the highest position: general superintendent. Lois and I have been friends with JoAnne Lyon for many years and spent two weeks with her in Zambia with World Hope which she founded. She is an amazing woman with a global view of the church.

In her acceptance speech, she promised to work with the church to “invade secular space, to reach the world and engage the culture like we’ve never done before.” Paraphrasing one of Jesus’ most famous sermons, she said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon us to preach the good news to to the poor. To set the prisoners free . . . from racism, poverty, human trafficking.”

Probably not since John Wesley himself—and the abolitionists and women’s rights advocates of my denomination’s past—has anyone been so passionate about fulfilling Jesus‘ mandate to care for “the least of these” than JoAnne Lyon!

Congratulations and God bless!

Footnote: My denomination has been ordaining women in ministry since 1850. It just took us this long to elect one to the highest office.
